Be OUTRAGEOUS!!!
What do I mean by that? Do something unusual that makes you stand out from everyone else.
See the photo. Brookdale’s in Hollis NH put together a humungous hay sculpture. It definitely attracts attention. You can’t miss it. The top of this hay sculpture must be twenty feet tall.
Another memorable hay sculpture was a few monstrous spiders. These used the same round hay bales with black legs coming out the sides and giant eyes. I don’t remember what the eyes were made of, but you could use large pumpkins or blue Hubbard squash for them. For the legs use your imagination or spray paint some branches black and tie them together to make them appear large and ‘hairy’.
In the spring, try some bunnies. How about some snow people in the winter.
Besides attracting attention, it will make people think, “If that’s what’s outside, I wonder what cool or unusual things are inside.” It will peak their curiosity. It is human nature to follow your curiosity and be compelled to park the car, get out of it, and physically go inside to see what’s in there.
Now it’s up to you to entice your new customers to like and trust you and buy more from you over and over again. Because once you get an excited customer, they will spread news of your place to everyone they know.
If it is really great, maybe even a newspaper or TV show (news or for entertainment) will come and take pictures and even do an interview with you. If you have plans for up-coming events, mention them for the free publicity. Remember, it pays to plan ahead; so always have something coming up that folks can put in their calendars to visit you and buy something.
